Perhaps I phrased it wrong, however what I was getting at was that
2b0 took two bytes instead of the one byte you'd think it would.


Ah ok, sorry, I misread what you wrote. I thought you were saying that besides 2b having the same number of bytes as 4b, that 2b would also have the same _range_ (-9999 - 9999) as the 4b.
