True, the error certainly seems to be more of assignment time problem.

However, a quick test...

d CalledProgram...
d pr extpgm('CALLEDPGM')
d parm1 4b 0

d p1 s 4b 0

/free
CalledProgram(p1);
if p1 < 0;
dsply 'Less than 0';
endif;
*inlr = *ON;
return;
/end-free

d CalledProgram...
d pr extpgm('CALLEDPGM')
d parm1 5i 0

d CalledProgram...
d pi
d parm1 5i 0

c eval parm1 = -20000
c return

Gives a RNQ0103 - The target for a numeric operation is too small to hold the result (C G D F). On the
comparison line, "if p1 < 0;".

I think the comparison requires some assignment behinds the sences to convert between binary and
packed formats as RPG doesn't operate on Binary data types.

Actually there are lots of invalid values for a 2B0 varible.

Yeah, but wouldn't you expect the error to occur on the assignment and not
on a comparison?
