In RPG, perhaps yes. But I think you CAN do the externalization in C.

From: Bryce Martin <BMartin@xxxxxxxxxxxx>

Just the other day I was thinking along these same lines. My thought was
that if I could soft code the record format in a variable I could move my
subfile setup to a sub procedure and just pass the record format in a
variable as the parameter that way I wouldn't have to write the same
subfile prep code over and over again for each one. Well as I found out,
there is not a way to soft code the record format name. I understand that
this isn't possible the way the compiler looks at DDS and RPG code when
compiling and moving this from a compile time check to a run time check
would introduce a new set of possible errors. But this would go a long
way to allowing for true procedural programming with ILE. It would give
one more reason for people to move towards true ILE programming. So for
now I'll just break up the code as best I can and hard code the 'WRITE'
statements for each and every subfile. What Jerry suggested is about as
good as you can get when externalizing subfile coding.

Thanks
