OK, now I'm frightened. I haven't used COBOL in a long time but I was always of the opinion that you needed to move spaces before moving a shorter value into a longer in COBOL.

I just tested this and see that padding does occur on elementary moves.

So did I know this once and have now forgotten? Did I never know this and so was moving spaces unnecessarily? Is my mind starting to fail? Am I becoming "normal"? How will I ever cope?
