That's because the compiler is smart enough to
know that an unreferenced variable isn't used and therefore shouldn't
waste memory. (How's that for preemptive garbage
collection/prevention!)

Actually, the memory is still allocated, but the compiler is indeed kind
enough not to bother moving the data from the input structure to local
variables. To see this is the case, bring up the program in debug and
eval the unused field name, you'll get back blanks (or zeros). And you
can even set the values for those fields with the eval statement, so the
memory is there.
