Well... Garbage collection doesn't have to use objects...
Even the humble VIC20 (an 1980's 8 bit micro), had a garbage collector, to
clear up varable length strings that were no longer used.... If every
string had its maximum length of memory allocated at runtime, then the
VIC's 3.5k's worth of memory would be eaten up instanly with the smalest
of programs... But the alternative, of having variable length strings
required treating them as 'objects', and having a garbage collector to
clear up the old instances....
All this in its built in Basic interperator!
