My point is, that it would be better to clean up the data in one swell foop (technical term), so your users never have to encounter the problem at all.

In my experience, 99% of decimal data errors come from blanks being in a database field ... (40404040), so it shouldn't be too hard to write a batch update program that spins through the data and checks the fields for invalid values.
