My boss gets calls all of the time from vendors trying to sell us a Windows server based system. His first question is always, "Will it stay up 99% of the time?" To which every Windows app vendor replies (he tells me), "No system can do that." To which he replies, "My system i will/does." And bear in mind, he's a Windows programmer.

I think David's email closer (IBM System i - For when you can't afford to be out of business) pretty much says it all. We use Wintel servers for email and Office documents file serving (though I tend to use the i's IFS most of the time). We use the i to run the business.

I spend most of my time writing/modifying programs; in my spare time I work on sys admin tasks on the i. Which I'm guessing, if we include CUME's, comes to about 1-2 hours a week. My boss baby sits those brand new (< a month old) Windows servers about that much time every day. I don't know what he's doing, but I have learned to tell when he's not a happy camper - he's sitting in front of the Windows server's monitor.

A more concrete example, perhaps, would be our order entry system. While it is possible to enter orders via a green screen, the bulk of our orders come in over handheld devices from our sales force. When a handheld breaks, the salesman can call in the order(s), but the i hasn't gone down since we bought it (model 520, 3 years), except when I apply PTF's and upgrades.

Subject: One final thought

Perhaps since this is being discussed today, I would welcome comments on a client server based Windows system. I have no exp. in this area. What are some of the problems that you have there, that are not issues on the Iseries? Be it in the programming area or the applications, need for more employees?
