Yep, DOS attacks are usually hundeds or thousands of computers pinging all
at once.

Perhaps, but before we assume, can the load from pinging actually get so
bad that it can be used for a DOS attack?

Is that what Denial of Service attacks? basically repeated pings... that
would be one reason for blocking.

Not true. Being able to resolve a symbolic address is only part of
the equation. Even with an IP address you may not be able to reach
that system (e.g., No route to host) for a number of reasons. Ping is
intended to tell you the host is reachable not just that name
resolution is OK.
