Maybe, but in this case, UNION is still the right way to go... Why bother to have to map to the correct field when a union will combine the two initial datasets into one result...

end as voucher,
case when hdvendor is null then advendor else hdvendor end
as vendor,
case when hdinvoice is null then adinvoice else hdinvoice end
as invoice,
case when hdpostingdate is null then adpostingdate else
hdpostingdate end as postingdate
from qtemp.apohd full outer join qtemp.aphhd
on hdvoucher=advoucher and (
hdvoucher=1235 or advoucher=1235)
