No - you can't put "or" between values - "or" is an operator between logical expressions.

if id = 2 and (newstat = 'P' or newstat = 'O')

is what the first statement should be

And more parentheses is always safer!!

Same as:

If Id = 2 and NewStat = 'P' or
Id = 2 and NewStat = 'O'
