Came up with something functionally the same, as soon as I verified that the combination of the %scan and the -1 in the same statement was what was killing it.

> c SUB 1 POS

Slightly more RPG-idiomatic, but functionally the same (might even produce identical instructions). :-p

Still wish I knew what was going on. At this point, I'm guessing it's some bug in the compiler, producing a funky instruction stream. I've even occasionally seen technically perfect MI source refuse to compile.
