If Don is already on V5R3, he should be able to safely use the
operational descriptors to get the actual field length of *varsize
param. Search for CEEDOD or opdesc and he should be able to get some
examples regarding this.

This isn't exactly true Tom. What Scott and I suggested will work just
fine - the trick is that you have to be careful to pass the length of
the variable each time. In Don's case, the simplest way was to pass the
length as a parameter. In another situation, using the keywords 'CONST'

and 'VARYING' together would work. I've heard that operational
descriptors can be used as well, but I haven't done so myself.
