Hi All: Thanks to all the replies. I ended up using Adam's suggestion by using %subst(). I had tried this but had a problem calculating how long the substring was supposed to be. Sometimes things just escape me and Adam's sample code jogged my memory and I was able to set up parameters for whatever fields I need at the time. I just finished testing the new code and it works just fine. Now I can expand the procedure to do more stuff. Thanks Adam and thanks again to all who replied and tried to help. It is appreciated.

Scott, your code was very similar but what I was trying to do was pass the name of the field and not the actual data in the field ( not filerec.PLCD but 'filerec.PLCD' and could only do this using pointers ) I don't know if this makes sense to anyone else but I have it working the way I thought it would and now gives me a procedure I can use for any fields from any file.

Don W.
