I was thinking more along the lines of comparing something like a
record contents to the MODS contents.

This statement confuses me Michael - isn't "duplicating a structure"
_exactly_ what a DS array does? More to the point it allows you to
directly compare fields within the DS without jumping through any
hoops. For example - isn't:

If array(1).field = array(2).field;

a hell of lot simpler and more obvious than:

%Occur(array) = 1;
tempField = field;
%Occur(array) = 2;
If tempField = field;
