Yep here's the entire program:

FSvcVHdL0 IF E K DISK

d idx s like(svcnum)
/free
idx = 230;
chain idx Svcvhdl0;
dsply svcnum;
chain (idx) Svcvhdl0;
dsply svcnum;
*INLR = *ON;
return;
/end-free

Here's the output:
DSPLY 230
DSPLY 230

The record with RRN# 230 has svcnum = 458.

Charles,
Are you saying that on your F spec, myfile is coded as K on
RAT column and the compiler is not error out the "chain idx
myfile;" statement?

Ok,

So I was wrong.

looks like
chain idx myfile;
chain (idx) myfile;

are both treated as chains by key field.

Sorry about the mis-information...

Charles

No it won't.

RPG always allows access to a file via RRN. Even if it defined as
keyed.

Depending on the F spec, compiler will error out one of those two
chain statements in your example.

I really not sure why compiler need developer to tell him
if the chain
is by key or by RRN. It should be able to know that from
the F spec,
just the fix format.
