Yes, but do you have the first (red with her picture on it) or second edition (black and yellow)? I got the ISBN for the second edition from Amazon.

Sharon,

IBM released a book called "JAVA For RPG Programmers" (ISBN
1889671231) but it's not a good book to start learning Java from but
it is good to have around since it does a decent job of translating
RPG concepts to Java. There are lots of tutorials available (check
out Sun's Java site) but you really need to get an understanding of
Object Oriented Programming for a lot of what you'll see to make
sense. For that, I was lent a book called "Beginning Java Objects"
(ISBN 1590594576 which is the second edition) that really helped.
The real learning didn't start until I actually got involved with a
big project and worked with someone who really knew it.

You'll also need some sort of development tools (unless you like
typing command line stuff and using Notepad to edit source). You
have a license to WDSC already (start with version 7) but you can
also use Eclipse. Make sure you have a relatively new PC with at
least 2 GB of memory in it.

My advice would be to read "Beginning Java Objects" and see if you
can help any of the Java geeks in your shop do a few things.

Matt

Good afternoon RPG Gurus. My shop may change their POS system to
IBM's Websphere Application Server and Websphere Commerce. So I
will need to get familiar with Java. I don't know if my company
will pay for training, and I would rather be proactive on this just
for my own good. So I am asking if someone can recommend a good
'Java for RPG Programmers' book. I do see one on B&N, but feel the
experts here would give me a better example.

Thanks in advance,

Sharon
