Given the proper problem domain, I would be very happy to use OPNQRYF. It's in my bag-o-tricks alongside FMTDTA and CPYF INCREL(). Each problem domain has a different solution set.

Take a phone book application. Who looks for KIRK by typing in SULU and paging backwards? Go to any major web application and search for SULU and see if you can click 'Previous' to get to KIRK. The paradigm is already in place for people to enter a new positioner. Amazon, Ebay, every search engine I tried...

I think that gradually, the problem domain you were thinking of became clear. I'm not sure any of us ever stopped to ask the OP what his problem domain is.
