Thats just BS Steve.

You don't have to use a GC language to build PDF documents or spreadsheets.
I have done both directly with RPG. Granted the open-source projects out
there have a much richer set of methods/procedures than I have built but if
I spent the time that the 10s/100s of developers have spent on these
projects my procedures could be just as rich. I built my procedures to
address a specific business situation, not to cover every possable feature
available for PDF and spreadsheet files.

If I have a future need to create any of these files with features I have
not implemented in my set of procedures, I will look at these projects and
probably implement one of them. Not because I can't do it in RPG but because
re-creating the wheel is not a good use of my time.

A lot of options you suggest sound great to you, but why
should RPG be
more turned into Java, Java already exists, use it where it

was mentioned in an earlier email,

a GC makes the coding and usage of a procedure library much easier.
people post often that they use Java methods from RPG to do things
like create PDF documents or read from spreadsheet files. RPG
procedures and service programs are good. but arguably not good
enough because we have to use a GC language to get the rich
functionality we need.
