for this. It was compact and just understandable enough to get me by.

You don't say what OS level you are at. V5R3 only needs the following:

@numa = %dec(%date(@numd:*mdy):*ymd)); //mmddyy to yymmdd

Using iDate, you would only need the following:

Select * From YourFile
Where iDate(YourMDY,'*MDY') = iDate(YourYMD,'*YMD')
