Thanks to all for all the suggestions. I finally settled on:

@numa = %dec(%char(%date(@numd:*mdy):*ymd0):6:0); //mmddyy to yymmdd

for this. It was compact and just understandable enough to get me by.

I also wonder about execution time but in this particular SQL update there shouldn't be more than a few hundred records (at most) to process.
