There is a "maxlength" attribute, normaly text is used for one-line-data, but I didn't find out how big can the maxlenght be. There is a limit of 1k if you use GET.
For longer fields I use "<textarea>", I tried up to 32k, it works.

Francis,

Exactly what is the limitation to how much data can be in a TEXT field on a html form? Just curious as to how big a field could be until it fills up the browser screen.
