Interesting. I have a feeling that I'm the "top proponent" that you're referring to, and that the message has been garbled somewhat.

At COMMON, I had a discussion (this was a public discussion in front of perhaps 75 people) with some top IBMers (Frank Soltis, Elaine Lennox, Alison Butterill -- and non-IBMer Bob Tipton) about the future of RPG. The statements made about GUI and Web is that they're doing some research in the lab, and that they may or may not produce something in the future, but that if it's important, we should petition COMMON to present it to IBM as a requirement.

When asked whether RPG is dead, they said that old-style monolithic RPG is dead. ( Bob Tipton thinks RPG is completely dead, but he's felt that way for years, and doesn't really count, since he can't speak for IBM. )

Nobody said anything about IBM stopping their development/enhancements to RPG!
