As you might have surmised, "Select" is/was the variable for ExtFile( ) on a UsrOpn table. I thought it was a little odd that I didn't get an error on that line, too, once Peter pointed out the cause. Plus, of course, the D-spec definition.


But sometimes reserved words aren't reserved words. I rarely use the Eval in /free unless I need to Eval(h). But based upon all of the comments here, it does seem reasonable (though confusing) that a normally reserved word could, also, be used as a variable. For example, in the context in which I had originally coded it, it would be reasonable to the editor to assume that this was the beginning of a Select-EndSL group and that the semi-colon should come after "Select" and that the other stuff was clutter.


I do hate it, as you said earlier Michael, when the error message isn't really the error. I kept looking at the ';' and scratching my head. But I can see that the message was correct, just hard to decipher because it focused my attention on a specific point. Sometimes one can't see the forest for the trees. Once Peter pointed out the cause, I did a Homer ('Doh!') and stood in the corner for five minutes.

I think (judging from the colour tokenizing) that you can't use Select

as

a field name.

It's probably a reserved word, thus a big nono.

I am definitely losing it. Perhaps because it's early in the morning.
I am getting the following error while entering the following line.
While this snippet is from WDSc, I get the same error in SEU so this is
not a WDSc issue.


Select = 'LIBR/NV' + %editc(l$cust : 'X');
RNF5507E A semi-colon is not specified at the end of a free-format
specification.


This is odd because, as you can see, there is a semi-colon at the end

of

the line. Odd, too, is that the examples in the ILE RPG Reference
manual are in fixed format, while nearly every other %bif is in /free
format.
