I've worked in BASIC, COBOL, RPG, PERL, and assorted other odds and ends
over the years.
I've never found one language perfect for all situations.

I really like the memory organization you can have with COBOL. There's
lot's of power in that. I'm also fond of segmented overlays, perform A
through B, and other bits. And I like typing,
SoIEnjoyVeryLongDatanames.....

RPG (since IV at least) I find very easy to use, faster than COBOL to
get a given result, has a better set (typically depending upon the exact
COBOL version being used) of built in functions, etc. But it's string
handling is very poor...

Which makes me think of PERL which made string handling not only easy,
sometimes a joy.

I still think there are some things that BASIC handles well too..

The point is I don't think I could ever say one language is the BEST
language. And under an ILE platform you have the great power of being
able to build modules with various tools depending upon what they do
best and get the most from them all.

Look at the task, and find the best tool. Don't try to make one tool fit
every situation.

More opinion than anything else I suppose...

Jim

Hello all,

Where does COBOL and C stands when compare to RPG. I see more
discussions
on RPG. Do you think we need to suggest our clients to convert from
COBOL
to RPG?
