This is an interesting issue. Ignoring your little slam of RPG (without the
engine, a Ferrari would just be a funky soap-box derby car <smirk>), the
whole issue of LOB archival is a good one.

No slam. I've been waving the RPG flag as long as anybody. My point was that giant VARCHARs and LOBs are strictly SQL beasts. You can't touch them with DDS - no display screen, no PF, no printer file. Once you've taken out tight DB2 integration (i.e. native I/O, external files) RPG has virtually nothing to offer to the problem of large VARCHARs.

If there's a slam, it's that I can't do all the SQL data definition tasks in DDS, which refers back to my comment that the language labs need the cooperation of the database folk.
