Subject: Re: Max length of a VARYING field

But there is a practical real-world need to store large varying length
text in a single DB2 column. Not terabytes, but say a megabyte.

I agree, although I think the capability tends to get abused. In general,
though, if the data is entirely owned by the SQL row and should be saved and
restored atomically with the row, then (if practical) it could reasonably be
stored as a LOB of some kind. I'm thinking a scanned image for a paper
transaction, or an ID photograph for the HR department.

There is a practical limit, though. I just don't think full-length motion
pictures should be stored as fields in SQL databases.

Between HIPAA, SOX and the rise of the auditor to semi-divine status,
there are some very unpleasant implementations coming up that will be
much nicer if we can keep all our customer information in the customer
master file, as opposed to having to mangle up a cross reference to an
IFS file to store stream file stuff.

Isn't this what a Datalink field does for you? The concern with datalinks,
though, is that they aren't saved and restored with the SQL data.
