I've been trying to keep away from printed logs for debugging; I've been using a simple debugging message queue instead.

That's an excellent suggestion, especially if one has a 'build MSGDTA' procedure available. There are so many options; if one has QSH or PASE loaded one can log to a stream file and use grep to search. I've stuck with printing because everybody in the shop easily understands it and it works even in RPG III code.
