I've done the same with a phonetic based search application. Each word is
parsed and translated (could use soundex, but I used Metaphone), then stored in
a database, along with the key data needed to access the record. Works well
for customer name / address lookups.

His own "full text" index. I was exposed to something similar at a
client years ago, very cool, and damn fast.
