I'm sure this is no surprise to some of you on this list...but I'm
processing a PF via IFS APIs (for a generic file program). It seems that
deleted records are processed as well as undeleted records. Does anyone
have a better solution than just bypassing the records that contain all
blanks in the returned data?

My RPG is pretty basic so I'll omit the IFS copybook stuff...
http://code.midrange.com/index.php?id=ca7de10425

when it hits a deleted record the data field is all blanks.

Thanks,
Tommy Holden

Hi Mike,

I'm not being sarcastic.

I'm currently looking to hire two RPG programmers, and haven't had many
responses. Of the 10 or so responses I have had, perhaps half of them
are from people with no RPG experience who figured they'd apply anyway,
just in case.

I'm an RPG advocate, and I often speak about the benefits of RPG. It's
very common to hear managers complain that they feel RPG is not a good
future direction because there's very little RPG talent. They have a
hard time finding RPG programmers. When they do, they're always older
people who they expect to retire within the next decade or so.

The other problem, of course, is that RPG programmers don't ever want to
upgrade their skills. This has led to the widespread opinion that RPG
is only for maintaining legacy green-screen software. But the lack of
talent is starting to eclipse this problem!

It really makes me sad.

Let the boss figure it out - restate the question as "why then use the
iSeries"?

It's not about the constructs of the language - it's the 'integration',
the I in ILE and the i in iSeries and what that brings to the business.
It's just another step in keeping and using the competitive advantage the
i provides.

"As far as losing AS/400's,..."

We have one shop locally that tried for four years to pull the plug on the
i.

Last week I found out they fired their CIO and re-committed to the i. They
tried to move to unix and couldn't make it work. They even rejoined Common
and one person will be in Anaheim.

Score one for the 'good' guys!

Isn't it kinda sad that we don't have the opportunity to give suggestions on
what enhancements we'd like to see............ I'm not trying to say that
I'm not thankful for the new enhancements we get but wouldn't RPG be even
better with feedback from the user community?

HAH! They pay in sausage. ;)

If you want to find RPG skills just come to Birmingham, Alabama. One of
the area's larger employers from what I have read is tanking. I believe
they have an iSeries staff of over 50. Lots of contractors on top of the
employee base.

The code is mostly rpg-sql with a smattering of real ILE constructs.

North Central Alabama 15 years ago was a large IBM midrange install
base. Not anymore. In 1989 I worked for a company that gave me one
objective. GET RID OF IBM. PERIOD. This from the CFO. I did and they
canned me. I guess the IBM logo tattooed on my rear did not help
me.............
