Since you are doing a CHAIN, it needs to look something like this.

CHAIN subfile record;
*in70 = Off;

Check for error
if found;
  *in70 = Yes;
Endif;

UPDATE subfile record;

Why wouldn't the indicator be shut off when the message displays?  The 
book says it will.

But, beyond that, I tried what you suggest and that made no difference.
