I have used several books and keep coming back to SQL/400 by example.
Usually gets right to the point for what i need to do.

I have the book and like it.

I have a coworker who has done some wonderful things with SQL.  He
claims 
to have learned it all via IBM manuals.

I use the SQL Reference the most.  However, in the section "Who should

read this" it says:
This manual is a reference rather than a tutorial. It assumes you are 
already familiar with SQL programming. This manual also assumes that
you 
will be writing applications solely for the iSeries server.  If you
need 
more information about using SQL statements, statement syntax, and 
parameters, see the SQL Programming book.
So you may want to start out with that from the above link.
