It can do the translation from one CCSID to another. I think the flag
you specify in the open to make it do that is O_TEXTDATA. This flag also
will do the translation on the write. You can actually store data in any
format you want. Scott Kelment has written quite a bit about IFS API's
and his website (http://www.scottklement.com/rpg/) is full of lots of
very useful information and examples.

2 quick questions. Only need quick answers!

When calling the _C_IFS_fgets external procedure in RPGLE, is the data 
being read in ascii? If so, does it get automatically translated into 
ebcdic during the read (in the RPG) or should a translate operation be 
performed after the read to ensure it is in ebcdic before subsequent 
processing?

Second question - can the IFS store data in ebcdic or is it always in 
ascii?

Just trying to clarify a debate.
