Thanks to all who replied.  This was the answer, and I should have known
that.  It has bitten me before, and for some reason I didn't think that
was the problem.

When F12 is entered the subfile display is turned off and only the 
Subfile Control should be displayed.  This is where my problem is.  
The Subfile Display continues to show.

Probably, you have OVERLAY specified in your DDS on the SFLCTL, so OS400

does not erase the display before writing SFLCTL.  That means, the stale

SDFLDSP is not erased, and can still be seen.

There are a variety of solutions, one is to add ERASE to the 'do not 
display the subfile record' condition in the subfile control record.
