Sending a report via e-mail

At a previous job, I was able to send a report via e-mail.  I thought we
used the SNDDST command and sent the report directly.  At my new job they
use the SNDDST command but they copy it to a text document first and then
send the test document.  

I can't remember if we had a package or not.  Is there a way to send a spool
file via e-mail without creating a text document first?
