The HSSF toolkit provides two ways of reading/parsing a spreadsheet. They call them the "EventModel" and "UserModel".
Personally, I've found the EventModel to be less error prone, and quicker when you need to read the entire sheet and not make any changes to it. I demonstrated this technique in the following article (requires a membership to the System iNetwork, but a free ("Associate") membership should suffice)
http://tinyurl.com/y33oxyThe UserModel is better for accessing particular rows and columns if you need to do so in a random order, rather than sequentially reading the whole sheet.
