Thanks again for the suggestions involving the use of basing pointers. I think the only reason I didn't think of it myself was because I don't normally think of RPG as being sophisticated enough to have pointers. And even though I've used pointers for communication with C (e.g., the C scanners called by the RPG recursive-descent parsers I've written), I never knew RPG had pointer arithmetic.

It's past proof-of-concept, and I'm in the midst of converting the product to use pointers (in the process, eliminating quite a bit of code, and a whole lot of arrays), in preparation for allowing it to use bigger communication buffers.
