Yes, I'd gathered that. I'm asking WHY this was done this way. What do you hope to accomplish by doing this? Is there code that exploits this functionality? i.e. one program that moves the file cursor so that the next one reads in the correct place. Or something like that...


Okay even if we move to ODP as *No, each time a file is accessed, a ODP will be created. Will it not affect the system's performance?

I doubt you'd notice the performance difference. We don't use SHARE(*YES), and we don't have any performance problems. However, I can't say for certain since I don't know anything about how your applications were designed.
