    c/exec sql
c+ select ITMNBR, ITMDESCR into :myDS from
    c+ testing/item_pf where itmnbr=:itemnum
    c/end-exec

if I remove the PR and PI, how will the SQL statement know 'itemnum'.?

Look at the compiler listing. There will be a section that describes the fields defined by the display file. You would use the field name that corresponds to the item number in place of... where itmnbr=:itemnum

(the name after the colon will be the same as the name in your display file)
