This can already be done using IFS unix type APIs.  But if this still
processes as an externally defined file then that will be cool ;-)

You can use the ILE C _Ropen, _Rreadxx, _Rclose family of APIs from RPG. Using that support, you can pass around a descriptor (of sorts) to the files from procedure to procedure, etc.

You get all of the same capabilities you'd get with RPG's file opcodes (including keyed access). For the external descriptions of the files, you can use externally defined data structures (which is pretty much the RPG equivalent of #pragma mapinc, anyway). The only hard part is enable level checking... to do that, you have to manually insert the record format level check when you compile your program.
