And there could be a bunch of other mail servers involved as well. I
know my email goes through at least two before it ever leaves our
network.

correctly, midrange often distributes the messages
only to find your
email server is busy, so it tries again at regular
intervals until the
message gets through.  This sometimes can even
result in a response to a
post appearing to have arrived prior to the original
post.
Sometimes if I post a message and I'm really anxious
to get a reply,
I'll go ahead and camp out at the midrange archives
site repeatedly
refreshing the screen and I'll see responses pop up
there before I see
them in my inbox.
