At the point I'm checking, I don't know the From Format of the date.

If you don't know the format of the date, surely you don't want to arbitrarily chop characters out of it?

The reason why I'm doing this conversion is to cater for an 8 long date
(e.g. *ISO) and a 6 long date (*YMD)

Here's the code just after my 8 to 6 conversion:
          when FromFormat = '*ISO';
             Test(DE) *ISO LongDdate;
          when FromFormat = '*YMD';
             Test(DE) *YMD ShortDate;

It sounds like you're writing a generate "convert date" routine. You might consider using an API instead of using TEST and %DATE to convert it, that way you don't have to manually code every format.
