I've been doing that..

For 
ldap_simple_bind_s()
I get "Invalid credentials". 

then from 
ldap_search()
"Protocol error". 

But 
ldap_search_st()
I get no error code at all, and I get an actual real-live pointer for the 
result parameter. 

But then 
entry = ldap_first_entry(ld: result)
returns a *NULL pointer for entry! 

So it looks like it's reading something, but not returning data for some 
reason, and I think from here it's ironing out details...

By the way, I also had the sysadmin "stop" the i5 LDAP server (it is not used, 
it is empty, anyway)..  And this has made no difference...

Next call will be to IBM..
