Doug,

You aren't, by any chance, doing something like
char50=%trim(something);
char10=%trim(somethingelse);
char60=char50 + char10;

because, if you are, then you are inserting the spaces back in
// something is a 1 char with a value of 'A'
// something else is a 1 char with a value of 'B'
char50=%trim(something);  // char50 is now A with 49 spaces after it
char10=%trim(somethingelse);  // char10 is now B with 9 spaces after it
char60=char50 + char10;  // char60 is now A, 49 spaces, B, 9 spaces
