That shouldn't make any difference unless those variable where also CL program
parameters and passed to that CL program by another program or command entry and
do not have the same storage allocations as the definitions in your CL or RPG
program.  If this is true, you're probably, now, corrupting memory.

I initialized all the passed variables {to blanks} in the CL & the program now
works with or without the extpgm().
