Editc and editw fill the output with blanks or "fill character" to a fixed length, char is variable length

Could knowing people shed light on the differences between %char,
%editw, & %editc?  Is there a preference?  Is there different behavior?
 Is %char a subset of %editc(fld: 'J')?
