Yes, I think you'd still gain an efficiency. If nothing else, the fact that you used options(*nopass) means that no processing is done if the variable isn't passed.

With the return value, the processing is always done. (the data is always returned)

But, I think that if you benchmarked it, you'd find that passing the data as a parameter is quicker than the return value, even though you have to copy the data from the global variable, it's still going to be faster. You'd have to benchmark it to know for sure, but that's my guess.
