Think of a pad of sheets with rows for RPG specs, a different pad for each spec type. Write your code on the sheets with pencil, then hand the sheets to the coding clerk who types them in for you. That night someone compiles your program and in the morning the printout is in your inbox. For clean up and small changes you can make a reservation for an hour or two of keyboard time later in the day.

Scary, eh?  Now, do it in 5K of allocatable core.
