Convert a Hex field to character in RPG -- RPG400-L

I have tried the CVTHC and CVTCH, but do they only apply to one charatcer of 
the hex field at a time. I want to convert the entire hex field. I would guess 
a 128 hex field would convert to a 64 character field ?
