There are many ways to do this without creating an LF.  I am curious as to
why you wouldn't want to create an LF, but if that is a requirement, then
you have options

1)  OpnQryf -- You can do this and key by date.  I don't have an example,
because I rarely use OpnQryf
2)  You could create an SQL statement that will present the data to your
program in date order (of course, if you CREATE the view, this will be an
LF)
3)  Inside your program, you could create an LF in QTEMP that is sorted by
date, and read from it
4)  You could get real tricky with a DS array, using QSort and BSearch

All of these items will re-index the data each time you run them
